SHL believes that the services it provides are best established and carried out by local companies using local consultants and local staff, responsive to local requirements. The operational model is for local medical consultants as significant shareholders and directors in their local company. SHL provides ongoing management and financial support to the local company until such time as it is established through the central team and by recruiting personnel such as administrators and Operations Managers to support the local directors in growing and developing the business.
The local company then works with Group personnel, including Group Directors and Operations Managers:
- To seek contracts with local PCTs, hospitals, Strategic Health Authorities, Independent Providers and Insurers, and contracts with local consultants to complete the work; and
- To recruit the best local consultants to work with the company.
The administrative support to carry out contracts won is then provided by local on-site personnel.
The Group believes that a critical factor in its success is that it is owned and run by surgeons (who are therefore familiar with the concerns of surgeons carrying out the operations) with the needs of the patients themselves and with the requirements of the PCTs and other commissioning bodies.
